LANGUAGE ARTS 7
Part of the core curriculum, Language Arts 7 challenges students to consider some heavy themes as they actively explore our narrative and informational (expository) genres: Realistic Fiction, Science Fiction, Poetry, and Autobiography/Biography.
Through close reading, analysis, and discussion of novels such as The Outsiders, Freak the Mighty, and Among the Hidden, students will explore the key themes Tolerance, Change, and Integrity. Together, we will make connections between our world and the lives and events depicted in the literature we read. Throughout the process, we will develop a more sophisticated understanding of how--and why--writers write.
Much emphasis is placed on writing, as students are exposed to a wide variety of assignments and projects, including: essays that serve as reflections and extensions of our experiences; essays that demonstrate emerging rhetorical skills; experimentation with creative writing (original pieces of short fiction and poetry); and the culminating multi-genre research project.
To focus our work and supplement our Reading & Writing Workshop (RWW), we'll use Glencoe's Literature Course 2 text. All Language Arts 7 classes across our district will be immersed in the same essential questions: Whom Can You Count On? Why Do You Read? What Makes Life Good? What Influences You? and How Can You Become Who You Want to Be?
