SELMA: responsible depiction of history?
With all the Bio Pics in release (think "Ring of Fire", "Ray", and more recently "American Sniper") the idea of dramatizing historical events to tell a concise, compelling story (that fits within a 120 minute time frame) isn't anything new. Debates have been waged for ages pertaining to the authenticity and accuracy of historical events and peoples' actions. Now, with the arrival of "Selma"-a film--NOT DOCUMENTARY--which focuses on the Civil Rights Movement and the relationship between the face of the movement (Martin Luther King, Jr.) and the former President of the United States of America (Lyndon B. Johnson) historians, politicians, and media crafters are duking it out. The current controversy in question concerns the depiction of President Johnson. History books widely credit him with supporting, advocating, and ushering in legislation for equality for Black Americans. The film's portrayal of Johnson doesn't match the benevolent image promoted in the history served to America's youth for ages, which brings us back to that all-encompassing set of questions: 1) Who's controlling the message? & 2) What are their intentions?
