2016-17 HW VAULT
Adversity/Theme Essay
OCTOBER 5, 2016
Prior to instruction on The Rules of Thumb and writing best practices mini-lessons, LA7 students drafted a "best-as-you-can-get-it" essay, using prior knowledge and experience, to serve as a ELA7 baseline writing sample.
To take things to the next level, we'll work together in class--and independently at home--to refine our writing. Our goal is to use our "box of tools" writing strategies and techniques to make our profile subjects, the adversity they've faced, and the lessons these stories convey as powerful as possible.
This is a process-writing project. I will model my process, writing alongside students and using my work as an example. I'll offer suggestions to help students improve their work, and together we'll share writing successes and struggles (and strategies to overcome obstacles). Students will have check points (homework assignments) and many opportunities to share with peers and give/receive feedback.
A polished, typed draft of the essay (for peer editing & feedback) is due Monday, November 7.
The FINAL draft of the essay is due Friday, November 11.
Essays will be graded prior toThanksgiving Break & individual writing conferences (student-teacher) will follow.

Part Rock Doc, part VH1 Behind the Music, our Michigan Rocks! vodcasts will feature randomly drawn profile artists AND an examination of their artistic contributions and defining places in music—and cultural—history.
Using iPhoto and iMovie, our partner groups will create a vodcast which:
1. uses Michigan Rocks! bio script for the narrative voiceover track
2. accomplishes a congruency between high-quality images and the narrative audio track
3. includes photo edits, effects, and transitions, which enhance the project
4. competes against peers’ projects in our Battle of the Bands single elimination tourney.
This is a research project. Students become the experts--and produce a multimedia presentation that serves as a teaching aide and entry into the Michigan Rocks! Battle of the Bands single elimination tourney.
Follow the action: from the field of 64--all the way to The Final 4--on the bracket below.

Design a Poster or Concert Ticket for your MI Rocks! Band/Artist
To compliment your MI Rocks! vodcast, your graphic design group has been contracted to design an original concert poster or collectible ticket stub to promote your band/artist's legendary live performance. Your mission is to identify a creative concept to convey. Here are some unique angles to consider:
Pay close attention to font design & color scheme, as well as layout (use of space). FYI: You and your partner are NOT expected to incorporate every element from the above list into your art. This is a list of ideas to explore & develop. Each MI Rocks! partner group is expected to design ONE original poster or collectable concert ticket. The choice of medium is up to you. Final projects will be digitally archived, so your work will either be scanned and saved as a JPEG high resolution file or you can simply email the document in this format to me at [email protected] To help get you started, check out this sweet advice @ How to Design a Poster: 10 Pro Tips Check out Carl Lundgren Art Studios. Lundgren designed posters for Detroit's iconic Grande Ballroom. Detroitrockposters.com also has a sweet collection or reasonably priced replicas. Check out their designs. The attached slideshow represents some of the art discussed in class. The FINAL poster or concert ticket art is due Thursday, June 5, 2014. |
